BJJ gi size guide Canada — Matsuru

One of the most common questions we get from Canadian BJJ practitioners is: "What size gi should I order?" It's a fair question — BJJ gi sizing is inconsistent across brands, cotton shrinks, and cuts vary widely between companies. This guide gives you everything you need to get the right size the first time.

How BJJ Gi Sizing Works

BJJ gis use an alphanumeric sizing system (A0, A1, A2, A3, A4, A5) based on a combination of height and weight. Unlike shirt sizing, BJJ gi sizes are not standardized across all brands — an A2 from one company may fit differently from an A2 at another. Always check the specific size chart for the gi you're ordering.

Matsuru BJJ Gi Size Chart

Size Height (cm) Weight (kg)
A0 155–163 45–58
A1 163–170 58–70
A2 170–178 70–82
A3 178–185 82–95
A4 185–193 95–110
A5 193+ 110+

Note: All measurements are post-wash estimates based on a standard machine wash cold and hang dry.

The Shrinkage Factor

Most BJJ gis made from cotton or cotton-blend fabric will shrink after the first wash. Matsuru gis are pre-shrunk, but you can still expect minor shrinkage (roughly 2–4%) with hot water washing.

Our recommendation: If you're between sizes or if you prefer a looser training gi, size up. If you're buying for competition and want a tighter, cleaner fit that's harder to grip, stay true to size or even size down if you're at the lower end of a weight bracket.

Gi Cut: Regular vs Slim vs Tapered

Beyond the letter sizing, pay attention to the cut:

  • Regular/Classic cut: More room in the shoulders and chest. Great for larger builds, older students, or anyone prioritizing comfort over aesthetics. Matsuru's Basic Gi and Apprentice Gi use a relaxed cut.
  • Slim/Competition cut: Less fabric = less for your opponent to grab. Better for competitors who've been training for a year or more. Matsuru's Comp MTSR Gi uses a competition-oriented cut.
  • Women's cut: Narrower shoulders, contoured waist, adjusted sleeve and pant length. Matsuru offers dedicated women's gis — the Sakura Women's BJJ Gi and Comp MTSR Women's Gi.

Kids' BJJ Gi Sizing

Youth BJJ gis use a separate sizing system (M0, M1, M2, M3, M4) based on age and height:

Size Age (approx) Height (cm)
M0 3–5 years 95–110
M1 5–7 years 110–120
M2 7–9 years 120–130
M3 9–12 years 130–145
M4 12–14 years 145–160

Kids grow fast — if your child is between sizes, size up. A slightly large gi is safer than one they'll outgrow in three months.

How to Measure Yourself for a BJJ Gi

For the most accurate fit, take three measurements before ordering:

  1. Height: Stand barefoot against a wall and measure from floor to the top of your head.
  2. Weight: Use your current weight, not your competition weight.
  3. Wingspan (optional): Measure arm span from fingertip to fingertip. If your wingspan is significantly wider than your height, consider sizing up for the jacket.
